UK Embassy in Belize

Going to an embassy while traveling often means that something has gone wrong, but they provide a variety of services for both travelers and expats living in the country.

Since Belize gained independence from the UK in 1981 there has been a High Commission located in the country. The current location is in the small inland capital city of Belmopan, which is 48 miles west of Belize City.

Citizens of the UK are advised to register their presence in the county (or any other) while traveling, but obviously most people don’t go to that trouble. If you’ll be living here or spending time in rural areas you may want to go through the process. You can do that either by downloading an e-mail form and sending that in, which is what they prefer, or doing on online registration. Details on both are found on the High Commission Consular site.

Getting to Belmopan

Belmopan is about 48 miles west of Belize City. If you’ve got a car you can obviously drive and the roads are good, but there are also frequent buses connecting the cities each day at a cost of around US$2 each way. The bus station in Belize City is a short walk from the Marine Terminal. Daily buses from Dangriga and San Ignacio also stop in Belmopan.
